The GEFCO 30K is the standard-issue water well drilling rig across North America. Built by GEFCO Inc. (now Bauer Equipment America, a subsidiary of the Bauer Group), the 30K designation refers to the 30,000 lb pullback capacity of the hydraulic top-head drive system. It is the most commonly transacted water well rig on the used market, with new builds still shipping from the factory in 2024.
The 30K is truck-mounted on a purpose-built carrier — typically a Peterbilt 367, Western Star 49X, or Freightliner — with a PTO-driven or deck-engine-driven Sullair 1000 cfm / 350 psi air compressor. The top-head drive delivers up to 5,833 ft-lbs of torque at up to 120 RPM. A standard rod storage rack holds 15 rods of 4.5" flush-joint drill pipe, with an optional 6-piece carousel system for faster rod changing.
Optional casing hammer packages (Beals & Welco being the most common) allow simultaneous drilling and casing installation — critical for unstable formations where the bore would collapse before pipe is set.
The 30K occupies the sweet spot of the water well rig market: enough capacity for municipal and large agricultural wells, compact enough for residential and commercial work, and widely understood by drillers across the US. The result is a deep liquid market — units come to market regularly, prices are well-established, and buyers and sellers can transact with confidence.
