The Schramm T3W and T4W are the foundational water well drilling rigs of the American market. Manufactured by Schramm Inc. in West Chester, Pennsylvania over several decades, these models became the default choice for independent water well contractors across the US and Canada.
The T3W (third series, water well variant) runs a 25,000 lb pullback top-head drive system with a deck-mounted 825 cfm / 300 psi air compressor. It is ideally sized for residential and light commercial water well work — depths of 500–1,200 ft in most formations. The truck carrier is typically a Freightliner, Ford, or International, making it familiar and easy to maintain.
The T4W steps up significantly — 70,000 lbs of pullback on a heavier carrier. The increased hoist capacity allows the T4W to pull stuck drill strings, handle deeper casing, and work in formations where the T3W would be undersized. Air compressor specs run from 900 cfm / 350 psi up to 1050 cfm / 350 psi on late-production units.
Both models have strong rebuild culture — a well-rebuilt T3W or T4W with fresh deck engine, compressor overhaul, and hydraulic work can match the production of a rig that cost twice as much new. This makes the rebuilt market the best-value entry point for new contractors or export buyers.
The T3W is the most common rig on residential water well jobs in the US — familiar, reliable, and affordable.
New drilling businesses entering the market. The T3W offers the lowest total cost of ownership to get started.
Strong demand from developing markets — the Schramm name is recognised globally and parts are universally available.
Farm supply wells, livestock water, and small irrigation — the T3W and T4W handle the depth and diameter needed.
Buyers who want to rebuild and resell — the T3W and T4W have the deepest parts market and the most technicians who know them.
Rural water districts and small municipalities can service their own well programmes with a T4W.
